Remember how part of the learning process in elementary school involved coloring?  Whether it was in art class, learning math, science, or reading, crayons were a staple in our young lives. Some people loved them so much they would even refuse to share their crayons. We could get them in packs of eight, or if we were serious collectors, we could get packs of sixty-four crayons with a sharpener in the box. These sure were the days; weren’t they?

Then somewhere along the way, we became adults working with pens, pencils, and keyboards to complete assignments. Calculators and processing software took over our lives. Maybe we even got married and had kids, and instead of coloring, we were trying to prevent crayon marks on our furniture. Either way, it seems that the joy and vibrancy of the days of coloring for fun and learning are gone, and we now live in a black-and-white world of rules and responsibilities.

Commercials promised that if we did certain things, we could find that color in our lives once more. Well, they were wrong! Those purchases usually wound up at the fall garage sale. But I am here to tell you that there is a way to bring the color back into your life! You see, coloring actually has many benefits that cannot be ignored. So it’s time to break out the old crayon boxes again and turn your office into your miniature elementary school workhouse where crayons and colored pencils rule the roost. And no kids allowed! Well, you can tell your kids you need a time out!

With Halloween here, it’s the perfect time to rediscover the joy of coloring while experiencing the many benefits. Below are some of the key benefits of coloring, and you can download our custom-designed, pumpkin themed coloring page as a starter kit back into the good life.

It’s Therapeutic

According to CNN, “Coloring definitely has therapeutic potential to reduce anxiety, create focus or bring [about] more mindfulness,” says Berberian. “Groundbreaking research in 2005 proved anxiety levels dropped when subjects colored mandalas, which are round frames with geometric patterns inside. Simply doodling, though, had no effect in reducing the other subjects’ stress levels.”  Coloring is powerful because it puts our minds in a meditative state. This allows us to focus on one thing and forget about whatever it is that is bothering us, allowing us to relax and focus on the present. Coloring, simply put, eases our troubled mind.

Promotes Creation over Consumption

The Pew Research Center published a report that displays some alarming statistics in relation to mobile connectivity. “67% of cell owners find themselves checking their phone for messages, alerts, or calls — even when they don’t notice their phone ringing or vibrating.” This means we are always connected to our tech and constantly consuming information. Coloring acts as a hobby that replaces technology and consumption for the amount of time we decide to color. A wonderful side effect of that is that we’re creating great art for our homes or refrigerator doors—if our children approve it, of course.

It’s Flexible

Can you imagine a world where people got frustrated because the person in line just couldn’t put the coloring book down? Neither can we. But we can surely start the trend today. The beauty of coloring books is that you can take them anywhere and work on them anytime This means you can choose when to zone out and relax. You don’t have to wait to find that perfect place to find solace. Whether you’re waiting in the bank line, at the DMV, or for your child’s class to end, you can color any time.  You’ll have an excuse to ask for a child’s menu in restaurants because you can get free crayons and a placemat to color on!

Replaces Negative Thinking

“Concentrating on coloring an image may facilitate the replacement of negative thoughts and images with pleasant ones,” a brain scientist at the University of New South Wales in Australia told Medical Daily. This is because it reminds us of happy days in our youth when coloring represented innocent and pleasurable experiences. Plus, the act of coloring interrupts the flow of negative thoughts, which can sometimes take over our lives. Coloring helps us stay positive, and you may even find yourself whistling while you color.

Coloring is great in so many ways! But the cumulative effect of coloring is the benefit to our physical health. When we are relaxed, focused, free of negative thoughts, and able to take our hobby that helps us heal anywhere, other parts of our lives improve, including our physical health. As a health coach, my goal is to help you improve your health no matter what it takes, even if it means coloring.
